What is a Flash website?

Macromedia Flash is essentially a web authoring tool which allows us to create complex animations, serve video and generally bring a web page to life.

Even with broadband becoming commonplace in UK homes, 'bandwidth' remains limited. For this reason Flash web design is impressive in its ability to incorporate highly animated multimedia content in a way that HTML alone could never do.

So why doesn't everyone use Flash?

Flash sites are certainly can be pretty. However, this doesn't mean that they are a must have for everyone.

Unlike HTML, Flash requires a plug-in. This means that a piece of software in addition to your browser is required to display the content. Generally it is best if you can make an educated guess as to whether your audience is likely to have the plug-in.

Most web experts agree that Flash is best reserved for high impact microsites, Flash games and streaming video or sound. Part of the reason for this is that search engines cannot spider a Flash website. Essentially this means that without creating alternative content your site may not be seen at all.

But I want animation. Is there a compromise?

Fortunately, yes. Flash content can be placed within HTML content at will, rather like the way in which images are used. This technique has helped to restore Flash's deserved good reputation after several years of gratuitous use.
